Project Staff: Emily Coe-Sullivan, Ed.M.

Funded by: The Claneil Foundation

This project led to the development of a teacher's manual that links curriculum on bullying and harassment directly to national education standards, based on Bullyproof curriculum.

Bullying and harassment in schools are serious impediments to children’s safety and their right to receive an equal educational opportunity. Dr. Nan Stein and Emily Coe-Sullivan will develop a manual for school district personnel across the nation that will integrate the topics of bullying and harassment into the classroom curriculum of 4th and 5th grade students. The subjects of bullying and harassment will be aligned with national Health Education and School Counseling performance standards (sometimes known as “curriculum frameworks”), thereby making it easier and more legitimate for classroom teachers to pursue the subjects of bullying and harassment with their students. The manual will help schools comply with both state and federal mandates, including those on gender equity in education, and those from the new federal law, No Child Left Behind.

Among those curriculum products that meet scientific standards is the one that Dr. Stein co-authored, Bullyproof: A Teacher’s Guide on Teasing and Bullying for 4th and 5th Grade Students (1996). This curriculum grew out of extensive classroom research into the gender-based dimensions of teasing and bullying. A three-year evaluation, funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), provided independent research into the curriculum’s effectiveness with fifth grade students and their teachers in Austin, Texas. Results from the evaluation study showed that students who used Bullyproof showed greater accuracy over time in identifying behaviors that constituted sexual harassment than students who didn't use Bullyproof.

This project will translate and transfer the discourse of educational standards and objectives to language that will legitimate classroom instruction on the prevention of bullying and sexual harassment. The goal is to create safe and more equitable classrooms and schools, and allow for the full learning potential of each student to flourish in a harassment-free learning environment.
