The Justice and Gender-Based Violence Research (JGBVR) Initiative conducts and disseminates research that meaningfully addresses the causes and consequences of gender-based violence and the social, health, and justice system responses to it. Areas of focus include child sexual abuse, college sexual assault, sexual violence, human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation, intimate partner violence, and the justice system response to gender-based violence.
Led by Senior Research Scientist Linda M. Williams, Ph.D., the initiative’s team members and collaborators have decades of experience conducting grant-sponsored and foundation-supported research, evaluation, and development of policies and curricula. They work with partners in the community, the criminal justice system, governmental and non-governmental organizations, international partners, and other researchers and institutes. The initiative contributes to WCW’s efforts to form partnerships with organizations worldwide to build research capacity and increase the impact of gender-informed research on gender-based violence.
Collaborators and team members are key to this work. Project sponsorship has come from many federal sources, including the National Institute of Justice, the Office for Victims of Crime, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
The initiative promotes the use of multiple research methodologies, driven by the nature of the inquiry, to examine the causes and consequences of gender-based violence. Researcher and practitioner collaborations are an important focus, as is incorporating the voices of survivors and their lived experience into the research. Service providers and survivors are involved in the interpretation of results, and findings are integrated into policy and next steps for research or practice.
