This study examines the influence of gender, adversity, and social learning on the development of drug and alcohol-use patterns in a sample of adolescents undergoing in-patient treatment for drug and/or alcohol abuse.
Mixed qualitative and quantitative research methods will be used to examine variations in the trajectories and narratives of adolescents with a range of drug-use severity and primary drug of choice/addiction. Results will provide a foundation for a larger federally funded project that will assist in the development of gender-specific considerations and adaptations to existing treatment and prevention models for substance abuse and related psychosocial and mental health risk factors.
