Women have never held more than 27% of leadership positions in American nonprofit theater. Why? In a field in which “representation” is important to the stories we present to the public, the persistent underrepresentation of female leadership is puzzling and problematic. To further understand this, the Wellesley Centers for Women partnered with the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, CA. In their study, WCW scholars Sumru Erkut, Ph.D. and Ineke Ceder discovered that while women are poorly represented in the top levels of leadership in theaters, people of color are hardly there at all. In this video, Ineke Ceder offers an overview of their findings as well as suggestions for theaters looking to change this. Click here for more information on this study.
