For Immediate Release: May 23, 2014
Two unique summer training opportunities are being offered by affiliates of the Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW) at Wellesley College for professionals working in out-of-school time and counseling fields, providing participants the opportunity to develop specialized skills that can enhance direct service to communities while enhancing career development. The Jean Baker Miller Training Institute (JBMTI) will hold its annual Summer Intensive Institute June 19-22, 2014 in Wellesley, MA; the National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST) will host its annual Summer Seminars July 14-18, 2014 in Brookline, MA.
The four-day JBMTI Summer Intensive Institute focuses on relational-cultural theory and teaches participants the paths of connection and how to build systems that support human’s relational nature and culminates in social change. The institute is ideal for psychologists, social workers, marriage therapists, school counselors, and others who support individual and community wellbeing, with continuing education units awarded.
Mary Vicario, a past participant in the Summer Intensive Institute, said that it “feeds our RCT souls and allows us to connect and bring RCT into the world. The connection is immeasurable!”
The NIOST Summer Seminars will emphasize the afterschool assessment system (APAS) which afterschool professionals--including directors, curriculum and education coordinators, state and municipal officials, intermediaries, community leaders, supervisors--can use to self-evaluate and enhance their youth-focused programs. Additionally, a Courage To Lead: A Retreat for Personal Renewal is being offered.
“I have attended the summer seminars two times,” said Janell Wood, Extended Learning Program Consultant with the Tennessee Department of Education. “I knew the training would be practical and that I could easily adapt the tool to meet our program’s needs.”
Participants can register for one, two, or all three of the seminars. Certificates are awarded upon completion. Visit www.niost.org to register and for more information.
The Jean Baker Miller Training Institute is the home of Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) which posits that people grow through and toward relationships throughout the lifespan, and that culture powerfully impacts relationship. JBMTI is dedicated to understanding the complexities of human connections as well as exploring the personal and social factors that can lead to chronic disconnection.
Work at the National Institute on Out-of-School Time bridges the worlds of research and practice by providing evaluations, consultation, and training to create innovative and effective solutions to out-of-school-time needs on a local, state, regional, and national basis.
